Change is central to the story of the Plethodon, the pastel-hued, salamander-like creature created for Meow Wolf by Demiurge, LLC that emerges beyond the walls of Denver’s Convergence Station.
To escape its ever changing world the Plethodon had gone underground planning only to return when the world it once knew had returned. But that day never came and his long wait allowed the great heat and pressure of the Earth to forever change him. Over time his body lost the ability to be a salamander. His soft skin hardened into a rocky shell. Its glossy wetness was replaced with the iridescent shimmer of a million rocks and crystals. His gills no longer absorbed oxygen but had become beautiful receivers of vibrations and energies; able to absorb the thoughts and memories of the multitude of souls that did and still do inhabit the Denver Basin.
The Plethodon is a gift to the people of Denver. A treasure. A living fossil reminding us that our home is a place with a vibrant and beautiful story that is ever changing. It is a reminder that change is unavoidable and can, if embraced, create luminous and wonderful things like The Plethodon, that are as beautiful as they are unrecognizable.
