ARTIST STATEMENT:
FALLING WATER IS A PUBLIC ARTWORK NESTLED BENEATH A BUSTLING VEHICULAR OVERPASS ALONG
THE TRANQUIL PEDESTRIAN WALKWAY THAT GRACEFULLY MEANDERS BESIDE THE SAN PEDRO CREEK IN SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS. THE ARTWORKS’S CENTRAL PURPOSE LIES IN THE ARTFUL INTERCEPTION OF WATER THAT WOULD OTHERWISE CASCADE FROM THE OVERPASS ONTO THE PEDESTRIAN PATH. THIS SCULPTURE CATCHES AND REDIRECTS THE DRAIN WATER, FILTERING IT BEFORE RELEASING IT INTO THE ADJACENT
SAN PEDRO CREEK. RISING RESOLUTELY FROM THE EMBRACE OF THE SURROUNDING NATURAL GRASSES, THE MONUMENTAL STEEL HAND EMERGES, ITS OPEN PALM ELOQUENTLY CAPTURING THE FALLING
WATER. THIS EVOCATIVE GESTURE SYMBOLIZES PURITY AND SERVES AS A POIGNANT REMINDER OF THE INTERCONNECTEDNESS BETWEEN HUMANITY, THE NATURAL WORLD, AND THE VITAL INFRASTRUCTURE THAT SUPPORTS THEM. THE DELIBERATE USE OF STEEL ENSURES THAT THE ARTWORK SEAMLESSLY WEAVES INTO THE FABRIC OF THE ENVIRONMENT, ITS SURFACE GRADUALLY PATINATING OVER TIME, HARMONIZING WITH THE HUES OF THE SURROUNDING LANDSCAPE. WITH ITS HEIGHT OF ALMOST 16ZZZ FEET, THE SCULPTURE BECKONS PEDESTRIANS FROM AFAR. THE ARTWORK UNVEILS ITS INTRICATE DETAILS AND PROFOUND SYMBOLISM AS VISITORS DRAW NEARER, INVITING THEM TO PASS BENEATH ITS COLOSSAL, UPTURNED HAND. HERE, THE DRAIN WATER FROM THE OVERPASS DESCENDS GRACEFULLY INTO THE PALM OF THE SCULPTURE, INITIATING A SEAMLESS JOURNEY TOWARD A NATURAL FILTRATION AREA. IN THIS CONVERGENCE OF PURPOSE AND BEAUTY, CATCH BASIN INVITES VIEWERS TO CONTEMPLATE THE PROFOUND INTERPLAY BETWEEN MANKIND, THE DELICATE ECOSYSTEMS SURROUNDING US, AND ART’S TRANSFORMATIVE POWER.
